Allison 3000 & 4000 Gen 4 Fault Code: P0897 Transmission Fluid Deteriorated

DIAGNOSTIC RESPONSE:
None

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION:
The Oil Life Monitor (OM) is part of the OEM 4th Generation Control System Prognostics Package. OM calculates the remaining life of the transmission fluid (oil) based on the established life for the required baseline fluid and is continuously adjusted for cumulative effects of parameters such as operating time, retarder operation, output shaft revolutions, and shift frequency.

When the remaining fluid life reaches approximately 1-2%, the SERVICE TRANS indicator (wrench icon in an OEM shift selector) illuminates, denoting a required change of transmission fluid. The indicator illuminates at each initialization of the TCM and remains illuminated for approximately 1-2 minutes after the first selection of a drive range until a fluid change service is done and the OM function is reset.

If the OM function is not reset within some period of time from the initial warning indicated by the illuminated SERVICE TRANS indicator, then a CHECK TRANS light illuminates indicating that DTC P0897, Transmission Fluid Deteriorated, has set. This indicates that the remaining transmission fluid life has reached 1 %. Reset the SERVICE TRANS indicator with the diagnostic tool diagnostic program or by pressing and holding the MODE button for 10 seconds. It may also be reset by selecting N-D-N-D-N-R-N on the shift selector, pausing briefly (less than 3 seconds) between each selector movement with the ignition ON and the engine not running. Finally, it may be reset with a SAE J1939 message.

CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING THE DTC:
Enabled by calibration

CONDITIONS FOR SETTING THE DTC:
The DTC sets if the OM function is not reset within 100 run time hours from the initial warning for remaining fluid life at 1-2% indicated by the illuminated SERVICE TRANS indicator.

ACTION TAKEN WHEN THE DTC SETS:
1. The TCM illuminates the CHECK TRANS light.
2. DTC is stored in the TCM history.

CONDITIONS FOR CLEARING THE DTC:
The diagnostic may be used to clear the DTC from the TCM history. The TCM automatically clears the DTC from the TCM history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without the DTC recurring.

DIAGNOSTIC AIDS:
1. The OM feature is available with approved TES 295 or TES 389 (January 2010 and later) fluids and High Capacity Filters.
2. Required calendar-based fluid change intervals are not monitored by the OM and remain applicable.
3. Refer to Prognostics Package and Features for additional information.
4. Refer to Fluid Check Procedures for additional information.

NOTE: Fluid type must be set for January 2010 and later calibrations, i.e., TES 295 or TES 389 in order for oil life to be correctly calculated by Prognostics Oil Life Monitor. Refer to Prognostics Package and Features for this procedure.

NOTE: Fifty hours of TCM time must accumulate before another reset of OM is allowed, either through the shift selector method or by action request in the diagnostic tool. Programming mode “offsets” for OM are not affected and may be set to various numbers regardless of the TCM time.

NOTE: Refer to General Troubleshooting of Performance Complaints for indicator lamp issues. The diagnostic tool action requests, lamp tests, may be used to check functionality of SERVICE TRANS (wrench icon).

Allison 3000 & 4000 Gen 4 Fault Code: P0960 Pressure Control Solenoid Main Mod Control Circuit Open

DIAGNOSTIC RESPONSE:
None

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION:
Pressure control Main Mod solenoid is normally closed solenoid used to modulate the transmission main pressure schedule. The Transmission Control Module (TCM) commands the solenoid ON when specific transmission and engine conditions are met. When the Main Mod solenoid is commanded ON, pressure is routed to the main regulator valve and lowers the main pressure schedule. The TCM sends control current to Main Mod solenoid from High Side Driver 1 (HSD1) via wire 111. HSD1 is continuously ON unless the TCM detects a fault condition. The TCM regulates the amount of current to the Main Mod solenoid by switching the Main Mod Solenoid’s Low Side Driver ON and OFF. Wire 174 completes the circuit between the Main Mod solenoid and its Low Side Driver (LSD). DTC P0960 indicates that the TCM has detected an open condition in the Main Mod solenoid electrical circuit. The Open condition may exist in the high side (wire 111) or low side (wire 174).

CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING THE DTC:
TCM initialized normally and engine speed above 200 rpm.

CONDITIONS FOR SETTING THE DTC:
This DTC sets when the TCM detects Main Mod solenoid low side driver has been detected in a failed open state.

ACTION TAKEN WHEN THE DTC SETS:
When DTC P0960 is active:
1. Main Modulation is inhibited.
2. DTC is stored in the TCM history.
3. The CHECK TRANS light illuminates.
4. The TCM freezes shift adapts (DNA).

CONDITIONS FOR CLEARING THE DTC:
Use the diagnostic tool to clear the DTC from the TCM history. The TCM automatically clears the DTC from the TCM history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without failure.

DIAGNOSTIC AIDS:
DTC P0960 can be caused by:
1. Main Mod issues such as:
– W17 4 high resistance or an open circuit in chassis harness.
– W17 4 (terminal 8 of 20-way) high resistance or an open circuit in internal transmission harness.
– Main Mod solenoid defective.
2. Unlocked connectors, expanded terminals, poor pin crimps or unlocked pins causing high resistance or open circuit.
3. Defective TCM.

Review applicable information in Control System and Transmission Specifications to find additional circuit specifications, system and connector diagrams, and troubleshooting tips.

Allison 3000 & 4000 Gen 4 Fault Code: P0961 Pressure Control Solenoid Main Mod System Performance

DIAGNOSTIC RESPONSE:
None

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION:
Pressure control Main Mod solenoid is a normally closed solenoid used to modulate the transmission main pressure schedule. The Transmission Control Module (TCM) commands the solenoid ON when specific transmission and engine conditions are met. When the Main Mod solenoid is commanded ON, pressure is routed to the main regulator valve lowering the main pressure schedule. The TCM sends control current to the Main Mod solenoid from High Side Driver 1 (HSD1) via wire 111. HSD1 is continuously ON unless the TCM detects a fault condition. The TCM regulates the amount of current to the Main Mod solenoid by switching the Main Mod solenoid’s Low Side Driver ON and OFF. Wire 17 4 completes the circuit between the Main Mod solenoid and its Low Side Driver. DTC P0961 indicates that the TCM has detected continuous transmission clutch slip. To reduce engine loading, main pressure is reduced by Main Mod in N (Neutral), 1 (First Range), and 2 (Second Range) when engine speed is below 1500 rpm. When this DTC is active, full main pressure is commanded.

CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING THE DTC:
1. Hydraulic system is pressurized.
2. No shift in progress.
3. Hydraulic default condition not present.
4. Output speed is above 200 rpm.
5. Engine initialization or shutdown is not in process.

CONDITIONS FOR SETTING THE DTC:
DTC P0961 sets during steady-state condition when continuous transmission clutch slip is detected.

ACTION TAKEN WHEN THE DTC SETS:
When DTC P0961 is active, the following conditions will occur:
1. Full main pressure is commanded. Main Mod commanded OFF.
2. The CHECK TRANS light illuminates.
3. DTC is stored in the TCM history.
4. TCM inhibits TCC engagement.
5. TCM freezes shift adapts (DNA).

CONDITIONS FOR CLEARING THE DTC/CHECK TRANS LIGHT:
Use the diagnostic tool to clear the DTC from the TCM history. The TCM automatically clears the DTC from the TCM history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without the DTC recurring.

DIAGNOSTIC AIDS:
NOTE: This DTC requires Clutch Test using the diagnostic service too to detect clutch slip during a partial stall and also to pressurize clutches for measurement without needing to drive the vehicle. Note that main pressure and clutch pressures are reduced when the Main Mod Solenoid is energized. Low commanded Main Mod solenoid pressures shown in Data Monitor correlate to reduced main pressure and clutch pressures. Main pressure is reduced by Main Mod in N (Neutral), 1 (First Range), and 2 (Second Range) when engine speed is below 1500 rpm. Higher Main Mod commanded pressures correlate to no reduction in main pressure and clutch pressures. Refer to First Steps and Tips for Troubleshooting and the OEM Technician’s Library for more information about the action requests for Clutch Test, Full Main Pressure Test, and also the procedure for Stall Testing.

DTC P0961 may be caused by:
1. Output speed sensor signal circuit issues.
2. Turbine speed sensor signal circuit issues.
3. Low clutch pressures, main pressure, or control main pressure.
4. Control module issues like stuck/sticky valves, mechanically defective solenoids, broken springs, damaged valve bores, plugged suction filter, damaged gaskets, excessive leaks to exhaust, etc.
5. Transmission issues such as damaged output speed sensor wheel slot, worn and/or damaged seals or seal rings, dislocated snap rings, worn clutch packs, rotating drum damage (affecting turbine speed pickup), debris, excessive hydraulic circuit leaks to exhaust or other hydraulic circuits.

NOTE: Damage to the output speed sensor wheel slot is an indication the driveline does not meet ATI specifications. Correct all driveline issues before putting transmission back in service.

6. Issue with TCM.
