Allison 3000 & 4000 Gen 4 Fault Code: P0614 Torque Control Data Mismatch ECM/TCM

DIAGNOSTIC RESPONSE:
Allows operation only in reverse and second range

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION:
Shift Energy Management (SEM) allows the Transmission Control Module (TCM) to request torque reduction from the engine controller. By reducing torque, shifts can be made quicker and at a more consistent output torque, which reduces clutch temperatures allowing increased clutch life. When an engine torque rating exceeds certain limits, Low Range Torque Protection (LRTP) is used. This feature limits engine torque in lower ranges to protect the transmission from damage if a stall condition occurs.

This test detects:
1. If a high-rated engine (as determined by the selection of transmission calibration) supports SEM/LRTP as required.
2. If the engine rating (as broadcast by SAE J1939 Advertised Engine Torque Curve (AETC)) is acceptable for the transmission.

For high torque applications, the engine must support the required messages to allow SEM and LRTP. For low torque applications, SEM may or may not be active.

CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING THE DTC:
1. SEM and LRTP auto-detection logic runs during first 25 drive cycles with engine speed greater than 400 rpm.
2. SEM and LRTP auto-detection logic checks that all required parameters for SEM are present per OEM Tech Data, Engine Management SEM and LRTP-SAE J1939 Parameter AND SA use. If any indicate ‘Error’ or ‘Not Available’, then SEM is not enabled and TCM calibrations requiring SEM, will activate DTC P0614.
3. This test compares SAE J1939/71 AETC against the (SEM and non-SEM) maximum engine rating allowed for the transmission. If the TCM calibration does not require SEM/LRTP and if SAE J1939/71 AETC is not received, then this test will not execute.

NOTE: The autodetect drive cycles counter is reset to 0 after TCM recalibration or SEM Reset Auto-Select.

CONDITIONS FOR SETTING THE DTC:
After SEM and LRTP autodetect logic has counted 25 drive cycles, SEM is disabled and DTC P0614 sets during the following conditions:
1. Engine is not on SEM/LRTP approved list.
2. Engine and vehicle support all required SAE J1939 SEM or SEM/LRTP messages.
3. Engine does not respond as expected to transmission SEM torque reduction request message.
4. Engine does not respond as expected to transmission LRTP torque reduction request message.

ACTION TAKEN WHEN THE DTC SETS:
1. The CHECK TRANS light illuminates.
2. DTC is stored in the TCM history.
3. The TCM allows operation in Reverse (R), Neutral (N), and Second (2nd) range only.
4. The TCM freezes shift adapts (DNA).
5. The TCM inhibits TCC engagement.
6. DTCs P2637 and/or P2641 may also be active.

CONDITIONS FOR CLEARING THE DTC:
Use the diagnostic tool to clear the DTC from the TCM history. The TCM automatically clears the DTC from the TCM history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without the DTC recurring.

DIAGNOSTIC AIDS:
DTC P0614 may be caused by:
1. Incorrect engine calibration.
2. Incorrect transmission calibration.
3. Engine calibration that does not support all required SAE J1939 SEM/LRTP messages.
4. Communication link problem.
5. Defective TCM.

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION:
The Transmission Control Module (TCM) is equipped with an internal temperature sensor mounted directly to its circuit board. The TCM takes action to protect against damage from overheating.

CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING THE DTC:
After TCM initializes normally and engine speed is above 200 rpm for more than 5 seconds, this DTC test will run at 0.5 second intervals.

CONDITIONS FOR SETTING THE DTC:
DTC P0634 sets if the TCM internal temperature is greater than or equal to 140°C (248°F) for 10 seconds while engine running.

ACTION TAKEN WHEN THE DTC SETS:
1. The TCM does not illuminate the CHECK TRANS light.
2. DTC is stored in the TCM history.
3. The TCM commands OFF all solenoids (SOL OFF).
4. TCM shutdown.

CONDITIONS FOR CLEARING THE DTC/CHECK TRANS LIGHT:
Use the diagnostic tool to clear the DTC from the TCM history. The TCM automatically clears the DTC from the TCM history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without the DTC recurring.

DIAGNOSTIC AIDS:
DTC P0634 may be caused by:
1. Defective TCM.
2. Debris on TCM.
3. External heat source such as vehicle exhaust in vicinity of TCM.

Clean the TCM if necessary. Excessive road debris will reduce the effectiveness of the heat sink on the TCM and could cause internal temperature to rise.

TCM Substrate Temperature is available on the diagnostic tool Data Monitor grid. Prior to ‘Connect’ for the diagnostic tool, check the ‘Troubleshoot Specific Problem’ box under ‘Connection Options’ and then check the ‘Sensor, Voltage, Ohms, and Counts Data’ box.

Allison 3000 & 4000 Gen 4 Fault Code: P063E Auto Configuration Throttle Input Not Present

DIAGNOSTIC RESPONSE:
Use default throttle values

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION:
A throttle source can be specified by:
1. Autodetect of the throttle source (prior to MY09 new release calibrations). Calibrations that have rolled forward from a previous software release will continue to have the autodetect source available in later CIN versions.
2. Use of CMC Override Throttle Source with the diagnostic tool to set throttle source (Analog, SAE J1939, SAE J1587, PWM, or Autodetect). Choose “Autodetect” from the CMC list only if the calibration is prior to MY09 or the autodetect feature has rolled into later CIN versions.
3. Communication link type selected during calibration request process for MY09 and later calibrations.

NOTE: New MY09 and later calibrations that did not maintain autodetect, i.e., did not roll forward from earlier software, should not be reprogrammed by the CMC Override Throttle Source. This may disable some datalink features for the calibration’s specified communication link type, calibrate with a new CIN that enables the desired throttle sources.

Throttle source autodetect logic increments counters on an engine start for candidate throttle sources, if detected. When the counter for any of the sources indicates five consecutive detections, the software sets a confidence flag to indicate that this is an available throttle source. Multiple throttle sources can be detected on a single engine start and multiple confidence flags can be set. There is no limit to the number of engine starts for autodetection of the throttle source until a confidence flag is set for a source. When a confidence flag is set for any one of the sources, a counter begins to count down for 15 additional engine starts. During the entire autodetect period, the software uses the highest priority source as the throttle source if multiple sources are detected before any confidence flags are set. When a confidence flag is set, that source is used as the source for the throttle signal. When the countdown period is complete, the software uses the highest priority throttle source with a confidence flag and the autodetect logic stops.

NOTE: Most autodetect installations (prior to MY09 software) use datalink messages, SAE J1939 (most common), SAE J1708/J1587, or IES CAN for the accelerator pedal % message instead of an analog or PWM input for throttle. The vehicle OEM has warranty responsibility for integration issues with any SAE J1939, SAE J1708/J1587, IES CAN links and any related vehicle controllers that cause the throttle source not to be autodetected.

CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING THE DTC:
1. Autodetect logic enabled.
2. TCM initialized normally and engine speed is above 200 rpm for more than 5 seconds.
3. Throttle source undetected.

CONDITIONS FOR SETTING THE DTC:
DTC P063E sets if the TCM fails to detect throttle position source.

ACTION TAKEN WHEN THE DTC SETS:
1. The CHECK TRANS light illuminates.
2. The DTC is stored in the TCM history.
3. The TCM uses default throttle values.

CONDITIONS FOR CLEARING THE DTC/CHECK TRANS LIGHT:
The diagnostic tool may be used to clear the DTC from the TCM history. The TCM automatically clears the DTC from the TCM history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without the DTC recurring.

DIAGNOSTIC AIDS:
DTC P063E may be caused by:
1. Incorrect engine calibration.
2. Incorrect transmission calibration.
3. Engine or vehicle that does not support required datalink messages.
4. Communication link problem.
5. Missing or defective throttle assembly.
6. Defective TCM.

Allison 3000 & 4000 Gen 4 Fault Code: P063F Auto Configuration Engine Coolant Temp Input Not Present

DIAGNOSTIC RESPONSE:
None

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION:
The engine coolant temperature can be specified by:
1. Autodetect of the ECT sensor source (prior to MY09 new release calibrations). Calibrations that have rolled forward from a previous software release will continue to have the autodetect source available in later CIN versions.
2. Use of CMC Override Engine Coolant source with the diagnostic tool to set ECT sensor source (Analog, AE J1939, SAE J1587, PWM, or Autodetect). Choose “Autodetect” from the CMC list only if the calibration is prior to MY09 or the autodetect feature has rolled into later CIN versions.
3. Communication link type selected during calibration request process for MY09 and later calibrations.

NOTE: New MY09 and later calibrations that did not maintain autodetect, i.e., did not roll forward from earlier software, should not be reprogrammed by the CMC Override Engine Coolant Source. This may disable some datalink features for the calibration’s specified communication link type. If a different ECT sensor source is needed other than that specified by the communication link type, calibrate with a new CIN that enables the desired ECT sensor source.

Engine coolant temperature is monitored by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) to determine if retarder capacity should be reduced based on elevated engine coolant temperature. Additionally, closed throttle downshifts may be raised. The coolant temperature input must be enabled by calibration and programmed as enabled. Three levels of preselect downshifts are available through programming. The engine coolant temperature may also be disabled through programming as well.

ECT sensor configuration is determined by autodetect logic for MY08 and earlier calibrations. The logic counts down for a total of 25 engine starts while recording detections of candidate engine coolant temperature sources. The engine coolant temperature source can either be an analog voltage detected on W135 or a message over SAE J1939, SAE J1708/J1587, or IES CAN. A confidence flag sets once a source is detected for five consecutive engine starts. Multiple sources detected before a confidence flag is set or multiple confidence flags will result in the highest priority source being used as the engine coolant temperature source. Multiple sources can be detected on a single engine start cycle. When the countdown period is complete, the software uses the highest priority engine coolant source having a confidence flag set and the autodetect logic stops.

NOTE: Most autodetect installations (prior to MY09 software) use datalink messages, SAE J1939 (most common), SAE J1708/J1587, or IES CAN for the ECT message instead of an analog input (W135) for ECT sensor. The vehicle OEM has warranty responsibility for integration issues with any SAE J1939, SAE J1708/J1587, IES CAN links and any related vehicle controllers that cause the engine coolant source not to be autodetected.

CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING THE DTC:
1. Autodetect logic enabled.
2. TCM initialized normally and engine speed is above 200 rpm for more than 5 seconds.
3. ECT sensor source undetected after 25 engine starts.

CONDITIONS FOR SETTING THE DTC:
DTC P063F sets if the TCM fails to detect the ECT sensor source.

ACTION TAKEN WHEN THE DTC SETS:
1. The CHECK TRANS light does not illuminate.
2. The DTC is stored in the TCM history.
3. The TCM uses default ECT sensor values.

DTC P063F may be caused by:
1. Incorrect engine calibration.
2. Incorrect transmission calibration.
3. Engine or Vehicle that does not support required datalink messages.
4. Communication link problem.
5. Missing or defective ECT sensor or engine coolant temperature circuits and components.
6. Defective TCM.

Allison 3000 & 4000 Gen 4 Fault Code: P0657 Actuator Supply Voltage 1 (HSD1) Open

DIAGNOSTIC RESPONSE:
SOL OFF, DNA, Inhibit TCC operation, Inhibit main modulation

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION:
The high side drivers are connected to the high side circuits of the solenoids and commanded on during normal operation. The high side drivers serve as a master switch to supply battery voltage to the low side drivers. High side drivers are turned on during TCM initialization and remain on during normal operation. High side drivers are turned off during cranking and for certain diagnostic responses. The open circuit diagnostic is determined by monitoring the status of the low side drivers. If two or more of the low side drivers circuits are detected by the TCM in a failed open/low state that are supplied by a particular high side driver circuit, the problem is assumed to be on the high side of the load and a high side driver fault becomes active instead of two or more low side driver faults becoming active. There may or may not be low side driver faults present with this DTC. High Side Driver 1 (HSD1) supplies battery voltage to the Main Mod, Pressure Control Solenoid 4 (PCS4) and Pressure Control Solenoid 6 (PCS6) via wire 111. The TCM regulates control current to the solenoids by switching the appropriate low side driver on and off.

CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING THE DTC:
1. DTC enabled with ignition ON, engine OFF, and battery voltage greater than 9 volts.
2. HSD1 is commanded ON.
3. DTC disabled while engine is cranking longer than 4 seconds, and while battery voltage is less than 10 volts.

CONDITIONS FOR SETTING THE DTC:
This DTC sets when the TCM detects two or more low side drivers connected to HSD1, e.g., Main Mod, PCS4, or PCS6 (if enabled) low side drivers, have been detected in a failed low/open state while HSD1 voltage is greater than 6 volts.

ACTION TAKEN WHEN THE DTC SETS:
When DTC P0657 is active:
1. The DTC sets while in a forward range, then shifts to another forward range. If failure occurs while in Neutral (N). If failure occurs while in Reverse (R), the transmission remains in Reverse (R) or shifts to Neutral (N). Once range is attained, transmission is locked in this range and there is no response to shift selector requests.
2. The TCM inhibits TCC engagement.
3. Main Modulation is inhibited.
4. DTC is stored in the TCM history.
5. The CHECK TRANS light illuminates.
6. The TCM freezes shift adapts (DNA).

CONDITIONS FOR CLEARING THE DTC:
